HELPING OTHERS SUCCEED

HELPING OTHERS SUCCEED - Download PDF Version

A few years ago, I was standing in front of a group of junior leaders talking to them about Mission, Vision and Values (MVV). I was pontificating about the value of having a Mission-Vision-Values statement when one of them asked me what my values are. I replied with “My personal values are To Help People, Care about People over Things, and to Take Care of Each Other.” Simple as that. Fast forward to today, a month-ish in for Redline Leadership, LLC (RLL) and I wrote on the bottom of my white board this morning, “Help Others Succeed.”

Simple. Accurate. And it never feels like work. Now that is my personal belief or value, not specifically drawn out for RLL, but really one of my core values that has me sitting here at my laptop in retirement, sharing my experience with others.

“Help Others Succeed!”

In conversation with a few different folks over the last couple of months when we were talking about starting this venture, a couple questions kept coming up which included; “Why are you getting back into the fire service?”,

“Why are you going back to work?”, and “What does Redline do?” This caused me to reflect on what I wanted to do and why. They caused me to question what I was thinking about doing. “Why are you getting back into the fire service?” was the most common. As I reflected on this question, I recognized that I was not getting back into the fire service. I am working with fire service professionals but not doing fire service stuff. Really, I am focused on leadership, which happens to include some fire service people but not exclusively. I am working with some individuals privately that are not in the fire service to help them grow, take control of their destiny, to lead their lives.

“Why are you going back to work?” was asked along with “are you running out of money?” This answer was obvious to me….I’m not. To either question. I found I was coaching and mentoring a bunch of people, and a couple organizations, over the last 3 years of retirement and I really enjoyed so we jumped in. “What does Redline do?” In a nutshell, Redline Leadership, LLC coaches and mentors fire service professionals (as well as non-fire service) to reach their maximum potential. We help people identify their goal and help them identify a pathway to success using our past training, education and experience. And we stand next to them (figuratively) along their journey celebrating their successes and holding them accountable for their failures.

So, in short, that is why you are receiving this newsletter. In it, I hope to offer some insight, advice, ideas, or perspective each month because I really believe leadership should be free. Professional development is not. Invest in yourself both in terms of the work necessary to succeed as well as financially. You pay a gym membership to stay physically fit, you pay for quality food, supplements and health care to stay healthy, and you might even pay a counselor to keep your head clear. You should also invest in your growth and development whether that means schooling or coaching. Invest in yourself.
